Here are my top three tips when it comes to photographing fast little ones. Children are one of the hardest subjects to photograph especially under the age of three years, so when learning this genre it’s important to have patience. There is always another day to practice and pushing a child will only result in forced emotion and will make you the photographer frustrated.
1./ Use a fast shutter speed
Never photograph a moving child under 1/250 ss. This will instantly create motion blur if there is any movement. Always keep your shutter speed above this number for successful in focus images.
2./ Narrow aperture
Consider using a narrow aperture so that you are able to keep more in focus and the focal plane isn’t too fine. I often use a narrow aperture when capturing children especially when outdoors.
3./ Auto focus tracking
I always use auto focus continuous on moving children to ensure everything is tack sharp. Remember you want your child to be in focus of the image, not another object!
